Acclimation, manganese removal, and backwash impact on full‐scale drinking water biofilter microbiome

چکیده

Biofiltration for drinking water treatment has several quality benefits but questions remain about biofilter start-up in temperate climates where temperature and changes can impact performance. A year-long full-scale demonstration was performed with biofilters operated parallel to chlorinated filters (O1) monitor the development of microbiota across acclimation period respect removal Mn total organic carbon, (O2) determine depth backwash events on microbial community composition function. Biofilter media biomass increased first 6 months operation after 9 achieved comparable filters. Prokaryotic diversity decreased when dropped. Backwash resulted an increase deeper biofilter. By next sampling (30 h post backwash), 16S rRNA gene copies were again more abundant upper layers. Metagenomic sequencing confirmed presence moxA mofA, oxidizing genes. The results presented help inform expected performance climates.

Manganese in Madison's drinking water.

Public concern over events of manganese-discolored drinking water and the potential for adverse health effects from exposure to excess manganese reached a high level in 2005. In response, Public Health Madison Dane County, together with the Madison Water Utility, conceived and implemented a public health/water utility strategy to quantify the extent of the manganese problem, determine the poten...

Assessment of a Continuous Electrocoagulation on Turbidity Removal from Spent Filter Backwash Water

Background & Aims of the Study: Spent filter backwash water (SFBW) consists of 1-5% of the total treated water typically and it has a high turbidity. Because of the scarcity of water resources and in order to prevent the environmental contamination, effluent treatment of rapid sand filter backwashing is unavoidable. One of the new technologies for removal of turbidity from the ...

Evaluation of drinking water treatment combined filter backwash water recycling technology based on comet and micronucleus assay.

Based on the fact that recycling of combined filter backwash water (CFBW) directly to drinking water treatment plants (WTP) is considered to be a feasible method to enhance pollutant removal efficiency, we were motivated to evaluate the genotoxicity of water samples from two pilot-scale drinking water treatment systems, one with recycling of combined backwash water, the other one with a convent...

Biofilms Impact on Drinking Water Quality

A paradigm shift currently occurs in microbiology, with significant impacts in a variety of environmental, medical and industrial applications. The old misconception of free floating microbes is invalidated by a different knowledge pattern: the great majority of terrestrial microorganisms live in communities associated to surfaces, called biofilms (Costerton et al, 1987; Flemming, 2008; Muntean...

Perceived agricultural runoff impact on drinking water.

Agricultural runoff into surface water is a problem in Australia, as it is in arguably all agriculturally active countries. While farm practices and resource management measures are employed to reduce downstream effects, they are often either technically insufficient or practically unsustainable. Therefore, consumers may still be exposed to agrichemicals whenever they turn on the tap. For rural...
